The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming looks particularly powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
