News has broken that original actors Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning to their iconic characters in the next chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The project is now in the works.

The actors will once again portray Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the roles they originated. It is believed their cameos will take the form of a flash-forward sequence, considering the main film series concluded with their characters settled into family life.

Sunrise on the Reaping is based upon a 2025 novel by author Suzanne Collins. It serves as the second prequel film after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Returning to the director's chair is Francis Lawrence, who was behind nearly all the previous films in the series.
