Cyclone the storm is forecast to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 storm as it shifts toward the Caribbean island, bringing dangerous sudden floods and mudslides.

This weather system, which registered wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean region and is projected to reach land by Tuesday, as reported by weather experts.

Warnings of blackouts and structural damage have been issued as Melissa generates up to 76cm of precipitation and storm surges as high as 4m above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," inhabitants have been told.

Melissa is the 13th named cyclone in this year's Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in late autumn.

Highest-Level Cyclone Risk

A category five hurricane is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is projected to weaken to a Category 4 storm before reaching the island, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it impacts the island.

With tropical storm-level wind and rainfall predicted to begin ahead of it passes over the island's interior - possibly even the national capital - advisories indicate that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"Several days of harmful winds and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause devastating and dangerous flash flooding and many rock slides," urged climate experts.

The nation's leader the statesman stated: "I know that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the optimal approach to address anxiety and any apprehension and worry is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being told to secure their homes with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to accumulate necessary supplies.

Warnings are also in effect for regions of Haiti such as the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the hurricane have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

This weather system is predicted to move across Cuba by midweek before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic Ocean.

By the point it arrives at the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have reduced to a category three hurricane.
