British Foreign Office has added an additional eleven further destinations to its official alert register concerning the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated beverages.

This updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to a number of serious incidents such as the fatal demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of spirits, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Government representative Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"If you're having drinks abroad, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer said.

"Should anything seems unusual, for example a headache that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – get medical help right away."

The full register of nations identified as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
